Karekare Beach - September 2008

Like Piha, which I mentioned in one of the earlier posts, Karekare is a black-sand, west-coast beach situated in the Waitakere Ranges.

From our home in Albany, it took us an hour to get to the beach. We stopped on the way to pick up a map and gather some information about the Ranges at the Arataki Visitor Centre ( the gateway to Waitakere Ranges).

Karekare was where they filmed "The Piano." I had never seen the movie apart from a few previews, yet, knowing a bit of the plot, I imagined that the chosen scenery would have had to be very dramatic, somber, and rugged.

The day we visited the beach was a glorious one and, yet, with cliffs, raging surf, streams, wind-swept dunes, and looming bush, I could not help but feel a bit gloomy, mournful...

E was thrilled to be able to run around, build sand castles, and tumble in the sand,... and eat it too... (we do feed him - for the record).
